COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics programme provides a comprehensive study of language, its structure, use, and impact on society, while developing strong analytical, communication, and research skills. In the first year, students build a foundation in linguistic theory through modules such as Sounds of English, Morphology and Syntax, Language in Everyday Life, Semantics and Pragmatics, Introduction to TESOL, and Language, Society and Culture. These modules explore pronunciation, grammar, meaning, language use, and the relationship between language and society. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through core modules including Problems of Language, Comparative Linguistics, and Language and Big Data, examining language variation, multilingualism, and the role of language in modern technology and data analysis. Optional modules such as Practical English Language Teaching, Language, Inequality and Social Justice, Communications Disorders, Language and Local Community, and Intercultural Communication at Work allow students to specialise in areas of interest. In the final year, students undertake a Major Project in Linguistics, conducting independent research on a chosen topic. They can further tailor their studies through options including Ecolinguistics, Forensic Linguistics, Language and Health, Second Language Acquisition and Pedagogy, Advanced TESOL, Language, Gender and Sexuality, and Language and Heritage. Throughout the programme, students gain practical and theoretical knowledge of language while developing transferable skills highly valued by employers. Graduates are well prepared for careers in language teaching, communications, media, publishing, research, public relations, marketing, and other language-related professions.
