COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English and Philosophy programme combines the study of literature and philosophy, enabling students to explore fundamental questions about human experience, ethics, society, language, and culture through an interdisciplinary approach. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation through modules such as Ethics in the 21st Century, Knowing the Self: From Wonder to Wisdom, Literary Pasts, Presents and Futures, Ways of Reading, and Transformations: Agency and Self. Students can also choose between Global Narratives in English and Issues in Applied Philosophy to broaden their understanding of literary and philosophical perspectives. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through core modules including World Philosophy, Rebel Literatures, and Transformations: Agency and World. They can further personalise their studies through interdisciplinary options such as Intercultural Communication at Work and Language, Inequality and Social Justice. Philosophy-focused modules include How to Win Every Argument and Happiness and Mental Health: Philosophy, Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, while English options include Working with Scripts, Romantic Revolutions, Shakespeare and Co., and Black Writing in Britain. In the final year, students complete both an English Major Project and a Philosophy Major Project alongside the core module Transformations: Agency and Social Change. Additional options include Philosophy, Film and Media, Being Good: The Foundations of Morality, Language, Communication and Power, Contemporary Literature, Culture and Theory, Writing Justice, Changing Worlds, Gothic Rebels and Reactionaries, and Early Modern Poetry and Prose. The programme develops advanced critical thinking, research, communication, and analytical skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, publishing, media, public policy, communications, and other professional fields.
