COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English and Media programme combines the study of literature, language, and media, allowing students to explore how stories, communication, and digital platforms shape culture and society. In the first year, students build a foundation in both disciplines through modules such as Literary Pasts, Presents and Futures, Ways of Reading, Analysing Media Texts, Understanding Media Industries, and Transformations: Agency and Self. Students can also choose between Global Narratives in English and Practicing Media Literacy, broadening their understanding of global cultures and media communication. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through core modules including Rebel Literatures, Media, Theory and Society, and Transformations: Agency and World. They can further personalise their studies through interdisciplinary options such as Intercultural Communication at Work and Language, Inequality and Social Justice, alongside English-focused modules including Shakespeare and Co., Working with Scripts, Black Writing in Britain, and Romantic Revolutions. Media-focused options include Analysing Popular Music, Researching Media and Communications, and Short Film Production and Exhibition. In the final year, students complete both an English Major Project and a Media Major Project while studying Transformations: Agency and Social Change. Additional optional modules include Contemporary Literature, Culture and Theory, Writing Justice, Changing Worlds, Gothic Rebels and Reactionaries, Early Modern Poetry and Prose, Lifestyle and Consumer Culture, Client-led Media Production, and The Body and Popular Culture. The programme develops strong analytical, creative, research, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in media, publishing, journalism, marketing, public relations, communications, education, and digital content industries.
