COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English and Film & TV programme combines literary studies with film and television analysis, enabling students to explore storytelling across multiple forms of media while developing strong analytical, creative, and communication skills. In the first year, students build a foundation in both disciplines through modules such as Literary Pasts, Presents and Futures, Ways of Reading, Film and TV Style in Close-Up, The Bigger Picture: Core Concepts, Contexts and Debates in Film and Television Studies, and Transformations: Agency and Self. Students can also choose between Global Narratives in English and International Ciné-Club to broaden their understanding of global cultural perspectives. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through Rebel Literatures, Putting Film and TV into Practice, and Transformations: Agency and World. Additional optional modules allow students to specialise in areas such as British Cinema, Analysing British Television, Film Programming, Shakespeare and Co., Black Writing in Britain, Working with Scripts, Intercultural Communication at Work, and Language, Inequality and Social Justice. In the final year, students undertake both an English Major Project and a Film and Television Major Project while studying Transformations: Agency and Social Change. Further options include American Television since 1950, Rubbish Film, American Cinema Since 1949, Contemporary Literature, Culture and Theory, Writing Justice, Changing Worlds, Gothic Rebels and Reactionaries, and Early Modern Poetry and Prose. The programme prepares graduates for careers in media, publishing, education, communications, film and television industries, and other creative sectors.
