COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Design for Film and Television programme is structured to develop the creative, technical, and professional skills required for careers in production design and art departments within the film and television industries. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as Art Department Skills, Design Concepts and Practice, Introducing Digital Skills, and Visual Culture and Narratives. These modules introduce key design principles, visual storytelling techniques, digital tools, and the cultural influences that shape film and television production. In the second year, students expand their expertise through Co Lab: Research, Exploration and Risk-taking, Industry Craft and Context, and Advanced Skills and Concepts. They also have the opportunity to tailor their learning through optional modules including Storyboarding: Visualising the Story, Enhancing the Narrative, Model Making: Object and Narrative, Character Ideation, Experimental Animation, Music Video, Digital Matte Painting, Virtual Production, and Prop Making. These options allow students to explore specialised areas of production design and develop industry-relevant skills. In the final year, students focus on professional preparation through Portfolio Research and Design Development, Production Design: Portfolio, Art Department Practice, and Reflective Practice. These modules encourage students to refine their creative vision, produce a professional portfolio, and demonstrate their readiness for industry employment. Throughout the programme, students gain practical experience in visualising, designing, and communicating creative concepts, preparing them for careers in production design, art direction, set design, and related fields within film and television.
