COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology programme provides a comprehensive understanding of crime, justice, and the social factors that influence criminal behaviour and criminal justice systems. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as The Justice Process, Current Issues in Criminology, Constructing Crime, Crime Research, Crime, Place and Justice, and Conversations in Criminology. These modules introduce key criminological theories, research methods, and contemporary debates surrounding crime and justice. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge through Applied Criminology, Managing Justice, Explaining Crime, Advanced Crime Research, and Crime Reduction and Community Safety. These subjects focus on the practical application of criminological theories, crime prevention strategies, criminal justice management, and advanced research skills. During the final year, students undertake a Research Project (Dissertation) and study Future Directions in Criminology, allowing them to explore emerging issues and conduct independent research. Students can further tailor their studies by selecting optional modules from a diverse range of specialist topics, including Media and Crime, Cultural Criminology, Crime, Race and Empire, Gender and Crime, Hate Crime, Identity and Citizenship, Drugs, Crime and Justice, Young People, Crime and Justice, Inequalities and Crime, Serious and Organised Crime, Green Criminology, and Cybercrime. This combination of theoretical knowledge, practical research, and specialist study equips graduates with valuable analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills for careers in criminal justice, policing, research, social services, policy development, and related fields.
