COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Policing programme combines the study of crime, criminal behaviour, and justice with practical knowledge of policing and law enforcement. In the first year, students develop a strong understanding of crime and the criminal justice system through modules such as Crime, Place and Justice, Problem Solving and Decision Making, Conversations in Criminology, Police Powers 1, and The Criminal Justice System and Crime Investigations 1. These modules introduce key criminological concepts, police procedures, investigative processes, and decision-making skills. In the second year, students build on this foundation through Public Protection, Crime Reduction and Community Safety, Explaining Crime, and Crime Investigations 2, which focus on crime prevention, public safety, criminal investigations, and understanding the causes of offending. Students can also choose between Evidence-Based Police Intelligence and Community Policing or Applied Criminology, allowing them to specialise in areas related to policing practice or criminological analysis. In the final year, students undertake a Research Project (Dissertation) and study Future Directions in Criminology, exploring contemporary and emerging issues in crime and justice. Additional optional modules include Media and Crime, Digital Policing and Counter Terrorism, Drugs, Crime and Justice, Young People, Crime and Justice, Serious and Organised Crime, and Cybercrime. Through a combination of theoretical study, research, and practical learning, the programme prepares graduates for careers in policing, criminal justice, community safety, law enforcement, public services, and related fields.
