COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing programme is designed to develop students’ creative, critical, and professional writing abilities through a combination of practical workshops, literary study, and industry-focused learning. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules such as Beginning Writing: The Writing World, Writing, Editing and Publishing in a Sustainable World, Writing in a UNESCO City of Literature, Literary Pasts, Presents and Futures, The Book Group, and Ways of Reading. These modules introduce key writing practices, literary analysis, publishing processes, and the wider cultural context of literature. In the second year, students advance their skills through core modules including Magazine Publishing: Concept to Dissemination, Advanced Fiction and its Contexts, and Imagining the Sustainable World. They can also choose from a range of optional modules such as Working with Scripts, Poetry and its Contexts, Romantic Revolutions, Black Writing in Britain, Intercultural Communication at Work, People and Planet: Pasts, Presents and Futures, and Language, Inequality and Social Justice, allowing them to specialise in areas of personal and professional interest. In the final year, students undertake a Creative Writing Major Project and study The Freelancer, focusing on independent creative work and professional development. Additional optional modules, including Writing Justice, Changing Worlds, Writing for Magazines, Collaboration and Performance, and Creative Writing in the Community, further enhance career preparation. The programme equips graduates with strong writing, communication, publishing, and project management skills suitable for diverse creative and professional careers.
