COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Costume Design and Construction programme is structured to develop students’ creative, technical, and professional skills across three years of study. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of costume through modules such as Welcome to Costume, Questioning Costume, Sustainability in Context, and Skills Passport. These modules help students explore the role of costume in performance, develop practical construction techniques, and understand the importance of sustainable practices within the creative industries. In the second year, students build on their knowledge through Costume Exploration and Co Lab: Research, Exploration and Risk-taking, encouraging experimentation, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. They also choose between Costume Direction or an Industry Placement, allowing them to either focus on creative leadership or gain valuable professional experience. A range of optional modules, including Slow Making and Craftsmanship, Millinery: Object and Narrative, Character Ideation, Tabletop Game Development, Drawing and Exploring with Natural Materials, Fashion Photography: Cover Shoot, Interactive Narrative, and Prop Making, enables students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals. In the final year, students focus on professional development through Industry Project, Next Steps – Professional Practice, and a Major Project in Costume Design and Construction. These modules allow students to demonstrate their creative vision, technical expertise, and industry readiness, preparing them for careers in costume design, construction, and related creative fields.
