COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Communications and Philosophy programme combines the study of communication, media, and philosophical inquiry to help students understand how language, ideas, and human interaction shape society. In the first year, students develop a foundation in communication theory, the psychology of communication, contemporary ethics, and philosophical perspectives on self-knowledge and wisdom. They also explore themes of identity and agency while having the opportunity to study journalism, promotional cultures, or applied philosophy. During the second year, students deepen their understanding of identity, global philosophical traditions, and social transformation. Optional modules allow students to examine intercultural communication, language and social justice, journalism and public relations, East Asian media and culture, gender and sexuality, argumentation, and the philosophical dimensions of happiness, mental health, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis. These subjects encourage critical reflection on communication, reasoning, ethics, and human experience. In the final year, students undertake both a Communications Major Project and a Philosophy Major Project, demonstrating advanced research and analytical abilities. Additional modules explore social change, media futures, advertising, journalism, public relations, power and prejudice, as well as specialist philosophical topics including morality, language, communication and power, and the relationship between philosophy, film, and media. Throughout the programme, students develop strong communication, critical thinking, reasoning, and research skills. These transferable abilities prepare graduates for careers in communications, media, public relations, marketing, education, policy, consultancy, and other professions requiring effective communication and analytical expertise.
