COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Communications and Linguistics programme combines the study of language structure, communication processes, and social interaction, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of how language shapes culture, identity, and society. In the first year, students build a foundation in communication theory, the psychology of communication, morphology and syntax, semantics and pragmatics, while exploring themes of agency and selfhood. Optional modules allow students to examine journalism, promotional cultures, or the relationship between language, society, and culture. During the second year, students deepen their understanding of linguistic theory and communication through modules focused on language-related issues, identity, and social transformation. Optional modules provide opportunities to explore intercultural communication, journalism and public relations, East Asian media and culture, gender and sexuality, communication disorders, and language, inequality, and social justice. These topics encourage students to analyse language and communication from psychological, cultural, social, and political perspectives. In the final year, students undertake both a Communications Major Project and a Linguistics Major Project, developing advanced research, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Additional modules examine social change, media futures, advertising, journalism, public relations, power and identity, as well as specialist areas such as language and health and forensic linguistics. Throughout the programme, students develop strong communication, critical thinking, research, and cultural awareness skills. These transferable abilities prepare graduates for careers in communications, media, public relations, journalism, education, language services, healthcare communication, forensic analysis, and other professional fields requiring advanced communication expertise.
