COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Communications and Film & TV programme combines the study of media communications with film and television analysis, enabling students to develop a comprehensive understanding of how media shapes culture, identity, and society. In the first year, students explore communication theory, the psychology of communication, film and television styles, and key concepts and debates in film and television studies. They also examine themes of agency and selfhood while having the opportunity to study journalism, promotional cultures, or international cinema. During the second year, students deepen their understanding of identity, media practice, and social change through core modules that combine theoretical and practical approaches to film and television. Optional modules allow students to explore areas such as intercultural communication, language and social justice, British cinema, British television, film programming, journalism, public relations, East Asian media, and gender and sexuality. In the final year, students complete both Communications and Film & Television major projects, demonstrating advanced research, analytical, and creative skills. Additional modules examine social change, American cinema and television, alternative and cult film traditions, advertising, journalism, public relations, media futures, and issues of power, prejudice, and identity. Throughout the programme, students develop strong critical thinking, communication, research, and media analysis skills while gaining an understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of the media industries. These abilities prepare graduates for careers in film, television, media production, journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, and related creative sectors.
