COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Communications and English programme offers a rich interdisciplinary curriculum that combines the study of literature, language, media, and communication. In the first year, students develop a foundation in communication theory, the psychology of communication, literary studies, and critical reading while exploring themes of identity, agency, and selfhood. Optional modules provide opportunities to examine journalism, promotional cultures, and global literary narratives. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of identity, culture, and social change through core modules focused on selfhood, transformation, and rebellious literary traditions. A wide range of optional modules allows students to tailor their studies according to their interests, covering areas such as intercultural communication, language and social justice, Romantic literature, Shakespeare, scriptwriting, Black British writing, journalism, public relations, East Asian media, and gender and sexuality studies. In the final year, students undertake either an English or Communications major project, enabling them to conduct independent research and demonstrate advanced analytical skills. Additional modules examine social change, contemporary literature, modernism, Gothic writing, justice and activism, media futures, advertising, journalism, public relations, power, prejudice, and identity. Throughout the programme, students develop strong communication, research, critical thinking, and creative skills while gaining a sophisticated understanding of how literature, media, and communication shape society. These transferable skills prepare graduates for careers in media, publishing, communications, marketing, public relations, education, and other professional fields.
