COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Childhood: Health and Wellbeing programme offers a comprehensive study of childhood development with a particular focus on the factors that influence children’s physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. In the first year, students build a strong academic and professional foundation through modules that explore learning environments, children’s holistic development, contemporary childhoods, and health determinants in childhood. These subjects provide an understanding of the key influences on children’s growth, health, and quality of life. In the second year, students expand their knowledge by examining enabling environments for children and communities, contemporary childhood research, social constructions of childhood, and global childhoods. Specialist modules in nutrition in childhood and supporting healthy lifestyles develop an understanding of the importance of healthy habits, wellbeing promotion, and preventative approaches to health. Throughout this stage, students strengthen their research, analytical, and professional skills. In the final year, students undertake an independent research dissertation, allowing them to investigate a topic related to childhood and wellbeing in depth. Additional modules focus on leaderful practice, sustainable childhoods, children’s emotional and social wellbeing, and the relationship between media, childhood, and health. These areas encourage critical exploration of contemporary issues affecting children and families. By combining childhood studies, health-related knowledge, research experience, and professional development, the programme prepares graduates for careers in education, health promotion, social care, family support, community services, and related fields, as well as postgraduate study.
