COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Childhood and Society programme provides a comprehensive exploration of childhood, child development, and the social factors that shape children’s lives and experiences. In the first year, students develop essential academic and professional skills while studying environments for learning, children’s holistic development, contemporary childhoods, and the relationship between children and society. These modules establish a strong foundation for understanding childhood from educational, developmental, and social perspectives. In the second year, students expand their knowledge through modules that examine enabling environments for children and communities, contemporary childhood research, social constructions of childhood, global childhoods, and the societal dimensions of childhood. These subjects encourage critical analysis of how cultural, political, economic, and social influences affect children and families in different contexts around the world. The programme also develops students’ research, communication, and analytical skills, preparing them for professional practice and further study. In the final year, students complete a research dissertation, allowing them to investigate a topic of personal interest in depth while applying advanced research methods. Additional modules focus on leaderful practice, sustainable childhoods, digital childhoods, and policy for children and families, enabling students to explore contemporary issues affecting children in modern society. By combining theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, and research experience, the course prepares graduates for careers in education, social care, community development, healthcare, family support services, and policy-related fields, while also providing a strong foundation for postgraduate study.
