COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Disaster Management and Sustainable Development is structured over two years to provide a comprehensive understanding of contemporary global challenges and the practical skills needed to address them. In the first year, students engage with core modules such as Subject Exploration in Disaster and Development, Themes in Sustainable Development, and Disaster Risk Reduction and Response, which equip them with the analytical and theoretical foundations of the field. Optional modules, including Health and Well-being in Disaster and Development, Integrated Emergency Management, and the International Development Study Visit, allow students to explore specialised areas and gain practical insights. Research skills are strengthened through the Postgraduate Research Methods module, and international and EU students can develop academic language skills relevant to geography. In the second year, students undertake a Research or Work-Related Dissertation, applying their knowledge to a substantial independent project, and complete an Advanced Practice Semester, which provides practical experience in real-world settings. This combination of theoretical, research, and applied learning ensures that graduates develop the expertise required to respond to crises, design sustainable interventions, and contribute effectively to humanitarian aid and disaster management initiatives. The program prepares students for careers in international organisations, government agencies, NGOs, and community resilience planning, equipping them with the skills to make a meaningful impact globally.
