COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Midwifery Studies at Northumbria University is structured over three years to provide a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and research expertise. In the first year, students develop a foundation in health and society while studying Universal and Additional Midwifery Care 1 and Midwifery Practice 1, gaining essential knowledge and practical experience in maternity care. Professional Practice in Midwifery equips students with the skills to navigate the professional, ethical, and legal dimensions of practice, while Academic Language Skills support international and EU students in effective communication and academic writing. In the second year, students advance their clinical expertise through Universal and Additional Midwifery Care 2 and Midwifery Practice 2, deepening their understanding of complex care scenarios. The Innovation in Midwifery Practice module encourages creative and evidence-based approaches to improving care delivery. The third year focuses on consolidating practical skills and research proficiency, with Midwifery Practice 3 providing advanced clinical exposure and Developing Midwifery Practice through Research allowing students to undertake a substantial research project that informs evidence-based practice. Throughout the program, students gain the confidence, competence, and critical thinking skills necessary to deliver high-quality care, contribute to service improvement, and engage in leadership or specialist roles within midwifery, ensuring readiness for professional registration and advanced career opportunities.
