COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing Science Registered Nurse (Adult) MSc at Northumbria University is a two-year program designed to equip graduates from any discipline with the knowledge, skills, and professional registration required to practice as adult nurses. In the first year, students focus on foundational aspects of nursing, including applied life sciences, promoting health and preventing ill health, and assessing and planning care for individuals with complex ongoing needs. Alongside these modules, students complete Nursing Practice Module 1, which emphasizes becoming a safe, caring, and competent professional across adult, child, learning disability, and mental health contexts, while also receiving support in academic language skills for postgraduate study. In the second year, the program develops advanced practice, leadership, and research capabilities. Students study innovative approaches to adult nursing practice and engage in Nursing Practice Module 2, which focuses on leadership, quality, and teamwork in clinical settings across diverse care contexts. The year culminates in a substantial research project, Developing Nursing Practice through Research, enabling students to critically apply evidence-based approaches, reflect on practice, and develop analytical and problem-solving skills. The integrated combination of theory, practice, and research prepares graduates to deliver high-quality care, lead within healthcare teams, and contribute effectively to the advancement of nursing practice.
