COURSE CURRICULUM

The Strength and Conditioning MSc at Northumbria University combines theoretical knowledge, applied practice, and research skills to prepare students for careers in high-performance sport and athlete development. International and EU students take Academic Language Skills for PG Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation students to support academic communication and postgraduate-level writing. Core modules include the SER PG Project, allowing students to undertake an independent research project that integrates theory and practical application within sport science, and Applied Strength & Conditioning, which develops practical competencies in training design, monitoring, and coaching for athletes. Strategic Interactions in Performance Sport explores tactical and decision-making processes, while Sport Professional Practice focuses on professional standards, ethical practice, and applied skills within elite sport contexts. Physiology of Sport Performance provides an understanding of the biological and physiological mechanisms underpinning athletic performance. Research Methods ensures students can critically evaluate literature, design studies, and interpret data to support evidence-based practice. Optional modules such as Applied Sport Nutrition, Working with Elite Performers, and Sponsorship and Strategic Sport Brand Management allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, including nutritional support, elite athlete management, and commercial aspects of sport. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive balance of science, practice, and professional development, equipping graduates to work confidently as strength and conditioning coaches, sports scientists, performance managers, or researchers in elite sport and related fields.
