COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport and Exercise Nutrition MSc at Northumbria University is structured around a series of core modules designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for a career as a sport and exercise nutritionist. International and EU students take Academic Language Skills for PG Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation students to support postgraduate-level writing and communication. The program includes SER PG Project, a substantial research-focused module allowing students to undertake an independent project that applies evidence-based practice to real-world sport and exercise nutrition questions. Sport Professional Practice develops understanding of professional standards, ethical practice, and practical applications in industry settings. Physiological modules, including Physiology of Sport Performance and Exercise Metabolism, provide insight into the biological and metabolic processes underpinning athletic performance, recovery, and adaptation. Practical Skills for Sport and Exercise Nutritionists equips students with hands-on techniques for nutritional assessment, planning, and intervention, while Applied Sport Nutrition focuses on designing and implementing nutrition strategies tailored to individual athletes and populations. Research Methods ensures students gain the skills to critically evaluate literature, design studies, and interpret data to inform evidence-based practice. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive balance of science, practical skills, and professional development, preparing graduates to work confidently and competently in a variety of sport, exercise, and health-focused settings.
