COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Microbiology program at Northumbria University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of microbiology, combining theoretical knowledge with practical research experience. The course begins with Graduate Science Research Methods, which equips students with essential research skills, experimental design techniques, and data analysis capabilities, complemented by Academic Language Skills for international and EU students to support effective scientific communication. Core modules such as Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics provide the foundation for understanding genetic, molecular, and computational approaches in microbiology, enabling students to analyse genomes and interpret complex biological data. Subject Exploration and Microbes and Disease focus on understanding microbial processes, including viral and bacterial pathogens, and their roles in human health and disease. Microbial Diversity explores the ecological and functional variety of microorganisms, highlighting their environmental and industrial significance. The program culminates in the Applied Sciences Research Project, a substantial independent research module that allows students to apply laboratory techniques, data analysis, and critical thinking to investigate novel problems in microbiology. Through this combination of modules, students develop expertise in laboratory practices, bioinformatics, and research methodologies, alongside the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to advance in careers in clinical microbiology, environmental science, biotechnology, or further academic study at the doctoral level.
