COURSE CURRICULUM

The Data Science MSc at Northumbria University is structured to provide a comprehensive foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of data science. In the first year, students undertake core modules including Research Methods and Project Management, Big Data and Cloud Computing, Principles of Data Science, Advanced Databases, Statistical Programming, and Machine Learning. These modules equip students with essential skills in programming, statistical analysis, data management, and machine learning techniques, as well as knowledge of cloud-based data processing and advanced database technologies. Academic Language Skills are also provided for international and EU students to ensure effective communication and academic proficiency. In the second year, students complete the MSc Computer Science & Digital Technologies Project, a 60-credit module that allows them to apply the knowledge and skills gained in the first year to a real-world or research-based project. This hands-on project enables students to specialise in areas of interest, develop problem-solving and analytical abilities, and experience professional practice within data-driven environments. The program is designed for graduates with backgrounds in computing, information sciences, mathematics, statistics, or applied computing, as well as professionals with substantial industry experience. Graduates are prepared for careers in data science, data analytics, and IT, equipped with practical skills, critical thinking, and industry-relevant expertise.
