COURSE CURRICULUM

The History MRes curriculum is structured to develop advanced research skills and a strong understanding of historical theory and methodology. Core modules include Historical Contexts, which introduces key historiographical approaches and concepts that underpin the study of history, helping students critically engage with different forms of historical writing. History in the Digital Age: Institutions, Issues and Ideas focuses on modern research practices, exploring how historical knowledge is created, preserved, and communicated in a digital world, while also supporting independent investigation into topics aligned with students’ interests. The Research Development module further enhances academic and professional skills by encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, often involving the organisation of a symposium with students from other subject areas, which broadens perspectives and strengthens research communication. Students are also supported through Academic Language Skills for Social Sciences and Humanities, particularly beneficial for international and EU learners in developing academic writing and communication. The program is centred around the 90-credit MRes History Dissertation, which allows students to undertake an extensive independent research project under the guidance of a specialist supervisor. Overall, the course provides a balance of theoretical knowledge, digital research skills, and practical experience, preparing students for doctoral study or research-based careers.
