COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Social Work at Northumbria University is structured over two years, combining academic study with practical professional development to prepare students for a career as a qualified social worker. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge and skills through modules such as Social Work Knowledge, Intervening in People's Lives, and Introduction to Social Work Practice, which provide insight into social work theory, ethical practice, and strategies for supporting individuals and communities. International and EU students take Academic Language Skills for PG Social Work, Education and Community Wellbeing Students to enhance their postgraduate-level writing and communication. In the second year, students build on this foundation with advanced modules, including Social Work Knowledge in Complex Practice and Professional Social Work Practice, which focus on managing more challenging social work scenarios and developing professional competencies. The program culminates in Critical Social Work Enquiry, a substantial research-focused module that enables students to engage in independent investigation, applying theory and practice to real-world social work issues. Together, these modules ensure students gain comprehensive knowledge, practical experience, and research skills, while completing high-quality placements that provide exposure to diverse client groups and professional settings. Graduates are fully prepared for registration with Social Work England and for delivering ethical, evidence-informed practice across a range of social work contexts.
