COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Conservation of Fine Art (Works of Art on Paper) at Northumbria University is structured over two years to provide students with comprehensive training in the practical and theoretical aspects of paper-based art conservation. In Year 1, students study Conservation Theory and Practice I and II, which focus on developing foundational skills in the care and preservation of works of art on paper. These modules combine hands-on studio practice with critical engagement in conservation principles, materials, techniques, and ethical considerations. International and EU students can also participate in the Academic Language Skills module, which supports the development of academic communication, though it carries no credits. In Year 2, the program advances students’ expertise through Conservation Theory and Practice III and IV, allowing them to refine advanced techniques and engage with complex conservation challenges. A central component of the second year is the 60-credit Conservation Project-Dissertation, where students undertake independent research that integrates practical skills with theoretical knowledge to address a specific conservation problem. The combination of structured studio-based learning, research-led projects, and academic support ensures that graduates develop the critical awareness, technical skill, and professional knowledge required for careers in conservation. The program prepares students to meet the professional standards of the conservation field and enter roles in museums, galleries, cultural heritage institutions, and private studios.
