COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Conservation of Fine Art (Easel Paintings) at Northumbria University is structured over two years to provide a comprehensive mix of practical and theoretical learning in art conservation. In Year 1, students engage in Conservation Theory and Practice I and II, which focus on developing fundamental skills in the conservation of easel paintings, combining hands-on studio practice with critical understanding of conservation principles, materials, and techniques. International and EU students can also access the Academic Language Skills module, which supports the development of academic communication, although it carries no credits. In Year 2, the program deepens practical and research expertise through Conservation Theory and Practice III and IV, allowing students to refine advanced techniques, engage with complex conservation challenges, and integrate scientific and art historical knowledge into their work. A core component of the second year is the 60-credit Conservation Project-Dissertation, which enables students to undertake an independent research project, applying both practical skills and theoretical insights to a specific conservation problem. Throughout the program, students develop critical awareness, ethical understanding, and technical proficiency required for professional practice. The combination of structured studio modules, research-focused dissertation work, and academic support ensures graduates are fully equipped with the specialised skills, knowledge, and experience needed to pursue a professional career in easel painting conservation.
