The MA Sustainable and Ethical Fashion at Northumbria University is structured around a series of core modules designed to integrate theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and industry engagement, preparing students to lead in sustainable and ethical fashion practice. International and EU students take Academic Language Skills for Design & Fashion to support postgraduate-level communication and academic writing. Proposal for Sustainable Innovation introduces students to strategies for creative problem-solving and developing innovative, responsible fashion solutions. Fashion Context and Relevance explores the social, cultural, and environmental dimensions of fashion, helping students understand the industry’s broader impact. Responsible Design Experimentation emphasizes hands-on, reflective practice to develop sustainable design processes, while Industry & Enterprise focuses on entrepreneurship, collaboration, and professional engagement within fashion. Sustainability in Action provides a substantial opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects, developing practical skills in sustainability and ethical decision-making. The Project Thesis and Portfolio allows students to undertake an independent research and creative project, synthesizing learning across the program and demonstrating professional competence, innovation, and critical thinking. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive education in sustainable and ethical fashion, equipping graduates with the expertise, practical experience, and professional networks needed to pursue careers that challenge conventional fashion practices and drive meaningful environmental and social change within the industry.
