COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Spatial and Environmental Design at Northumbria University is structured around a series of core modules that provide both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in creative and sustainable design. International and EU students take Academic Language Skills for Design and Fashion to support postgraduate-level writing and communication. Adaptive Environmental Design explores innovative approaches to designing responsive, flexible, and sustainable environments, while Spatial Futures encourages students to anticipate and engage with emerging trends in spatial planning, urban design, and environmental practice. Research Through Design develops students’ abilities to investigate design challenges using experimental and evidence-based approaches, integrating theory and practice to inform creative solutions. Responsible Design Practice emphasizes ethical, socially conscious, and environmentally sustainable approaches to professional design work. The program culminates in the Project or Thesis, a substantial independent research or design project that allows students to apply their learning, develop a personal design vision, and produce work that demonstrates technical skill, critical thinking, and professional competence. Together, these modules ensure that graduates gain a comprehensive understanding of spatial and environmental design principles, advanced creative and technical skills, and the ability to approach design challenges with innovation and social responsibility. The program prepares students for careers in architecture, urban and landscape design, environmental consultancy, and related creative fields, equipping them to deliver impactful, forward-thinking design solutions.
