COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Publishing program at Northumbria University is structured around a set of core modules designed to provide both academic knowledge and practical experience in the publishing industry. International and EU students undertake the Academic Language Skills for Social Sciences and Humanities module, which supports the development of academic writing and communication skills necessary for postgraduate study. The Introduction to Publishing module provides a foundation in the principles, processes, and history of the publishing industry, while Manuscript to Market focuses on the journey of a work from concept and commissioning through to production, marketing, and sales. People in Publishing examines the roles, skills, and organizational structures within the industry, giving students insight into team dynamics and professional practices. The Publishing Placement module offers hands-on experience with a global publisher or related organization, allowing students to apply their learning in a real-world context and develop industry-relevant skills. The Major Publishing Project is the centerpiece of the program, enabling students to undertake an extended research or practical project under expert supervision, integrating their knowledge and experience from other modules. Together, these modules equip graduates with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary publishing, practical industry experience, and a professional portfolio, preparing them for successful careers in a range of publishing-related roles.
