COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA History curriculum is designed to develop a strong foundation in historical knowledge, critical thinking, and research skills. Core modules such as Historical Contexts provide an understanding of key themes and frameworks in history, while War and Peace in Historical Perspective explores conflict and diplomacy across different periods. History in the Digital Age: Institutions, Issues and Ideas introduces students to modern approaches in historical research, including digital tools and contemporary debates. Students are also supported through Academic Language Skills for Social Sciences and Humanities, particularly beneficial for international and EU learners. The program culminates in a 60-credit History Dissertation, where students undertake an independent research project on a topic of their choice, guided by a specialist supervisor. In addition to core modules, students can select optional modules to tailor their studies according to their interests. Options include Britain’s Empires: Imperialism and Resistance since the 16th Century, which examines the impact of imperialism and responses to it, and an Individually Negotiated Topic, allowing for customised study in a specific area. Overall, the course combines traditional historical analysis with modern research methods, enabling students to develop advanced academic skills and specialised knowledge in their chosen field of history.
