COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA program offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines core and optional modules to provide both foundational knowledge and opportunities for specialization in language and linguistics. Core modules such as Language: Structure and Use, Research Methods, Psychology of Language, and Sociolinguistics equip students with essential theoretical understanding and research skills needed to analyse language in cognitive, social, and practical contexts. The Dissertation is a key component, allowing students to undertake independent research and explore a topic of their choice in depth. A wide range of optional modules enables students to tailor their studies according to their interests, including Cognitive Linguistics, World Englishes, Variation, Change and Corpus Linguistics, Language and Social Disadvantage, and Language, Meaning and the Mind. Students interested in teaching English to speakers of other languages can choose from TESOL-focused modules such as Investigating Language for TESOL, TESOL Syllabus and Materials Design, Investigating Second Language Acquisition, Exploring the TESOL Classroom, and TESOL in the World. The Negotiated Study option further enhances flexibility. International and EU students also benefit from an Academic Language Skills module to strengthen academic communication. Overall, the program supports both academic development and diverse career pathways.
