COURSE CURRICULUM

The English Language and Linguistics MA curriculum offers a balanced combination of core and optional modules, allowing students to develop both foundational knowledge and specialized expertise. Core modules such as Language: Structure and Use, Research Methods, Psychology of Language, and Sociolinguistics provide a strong grounding in linguistic theory, research skills, and the study of language in social and cognitive contexts. The Dissertation forms a major part of the program, enabling students to conduct independent research and apply their analytical skills to a chosen topic. Students can tailor their studies through a wide range of optional modules, including Cognitive Linguistics, World Englishes, Variation, Change and Corpus Linguistics, and Language and Social Disadvantage, which explore different dimensions of language and its use. Additional options focused on teaching English to speakers of other languages, such as Investigating Language for TESOL, TESOL Syllabus and Materials Design, Investigating Second Language Acquisition, Exploring the TESOL Classroom, and TESOL in the World, provide pathways for those interested in language education. A Negotiated Study option allows further flexibility. International and EU students also benefit from an Academic Language Skills module to enhance academic communication. Overall, the program supports both academic development and career preparation.
