COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northumbria University integrates a series of core modules designed to develop advanced theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical understanding of crime and justice in a global context. The program begins with Research Methods for Global Criminology, which equips students with the analytical and methodological skills required to conduct rigorous academic and applied research. Comparative Penal Policy examines different approaches to criminal justice systems and sentencing practices worldwide, fostering a critical understanding of policy variations and their social impacts. International Crime, Policing and Security explores cross-border crime, law enforcement strategies, and global security challenges, highlighting the interconnected nature of contemporary criminal justice. Social Exclusion and Victimisation in a Global Context addresses the social, economic, and political factors that contribute to marginalisation, vulnerability, and victimisation, enabling students to consider justice from a human rights and societal perspective. The Social Sciences Postgraduate Dissertation, a 60-credit module, provides an opportunity for independent, in-depth research on a chosen topic, allowing students to apply theory, methodology, and critical analysis in practice. International and EU students may also take the Academic Language Skills module to enhance communication and academic writing. Together, these modules prepare graduates for careers in law enforcement, community safety, policy development, research, and wider criminal justice roles, as well as for further study at the doctoral level.
