COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Creative Writing at Northumbria University combines core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive development of advanced writing skills and professional practice. Core modules include Creativity, which cultivates imaginative and original approaches to writing, Professional Practice: Writing in an Industry Context, which offers insights into the literary and publishing industries, and the Writing Portfolio, a 60-credit module allowing students to produce a substantial body of work across different genres. Optional modules give students the opportunity to tailor their studies according to their interests and career goals, with choices such as Approaches to Writing, Experiments in Writing, Reading as a Writer, and Creative Nonfiction. These modules encourage exploration of style, voice, and form, while fostering critical thinking and analytical skills. International and EU students can also benefit from the Academic Language Skills module to enhance academic communication, though it carries no credits. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to engage with professional networks and practical experiences, building both creative expertise and employability skills.
