COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program that combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research experience to provide a comprehensive understanding of human behaviour, cognition, and mental health. In Year 1, students build a foundation through core modules such as Introduction to Psychology, Psychological Research Methodologies, Personality and Health Psychology, and An Introduction to Mental Health, while gaining hands-on experience in qualitative and quantitative laboratory skills. Academic language support is provided for international students. Year 2 expands students’ understanding with core modules in advanced experimental and survey methods, psychobiology, cognition, individual differences, and social and developmental psychology, alongside a wide selection of optional modules, including positive psychology, investigative psychology, leadership, sleep and health, and study abroad opportunities, allowing students to tailor their degree to their interests. Year 3 offers a full study abroad year option, providing international experience and broader perspectives on psychology. In Year 4, students focus on advanced topics through core modules in Neuropsychology and Cognitive Science, the Psychology Project, and Mental Health Problems: Evaluating and Synthesizing Evidence, while optional modules enable further specialization in areas such as health psychology, organisational psychology, consumer psychology, sport performance, digital health, hormones and behaviour, and criminal justice. The program integrates research, practical application, and theory to prepare students for professional practice or postgraduate study.
