COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport Coaching BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a structured and practical pathway for students aspiring to become skilled coaches, sports educators, and leaders in various sporting contexts. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in academic and professional skills, research methods, sports coaching principles, long-term athlete development, child development, coaching science, and the social aspects of sport and consumer behaviour, supported by academic language modules for international and EU students. The second year expands on this foundation with core modules in professional development, coaching practice, leadership, and pedagogy, while offering a broad range of optional modules, including sport study abroad, performance analysis, applied nutrition, strength and conditioning, physical activity and health, business and marketing in sport, and analytics, allowing students to tailor their learning to their interests and career goals. In the third year, students have the opportunity to undertake an optional study abroad year or a work placement in sport, exercise, and rehabilitation, providing real-world experience and professional development. The final year focuses on advanced coaching practice, enhancing coaching craft, and completing a substantial undergraduate project, with optional modules in high-performance talent identification, paediatric sport science, sports medicine, event management, applied coaching, global sport management, health and behaviour change, and professional career development. The program blends theory, applied learning, and practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in coaching, performance analysis, sports development, education, and leadership across community, national, and elite sport environments.
