COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport and Exercise Science BSc (Hons) program at Northumbria University provides a comprehensive pathway for students to develop practical, theoretical, and professional expertise in sport, exercise, and rehabilitation. In the foundation and first year, students build core knowledge and skills, including psychology, human physiology, anatomy and biomechanics, energetics of exercise, research methods, and professional development, with additional academic language support for international and EU students. The second year focuses on advanced assessment and research, sport performance and health evaluation, and professional practice, while offering optional modules in areas such as extreme physiology, strength and conditioning, applied nutrition, performance analysis, physical activity and health, sport management, business marketing, and analytics, alongside opportunities for study abroad. The third year allows students to gain international or practical experience through a work placement or sport study abroad year, providing real-world application of their skills. The final year integrates research and applied practice through a major undergraduate project and modules in exercise and health intervention strategies, while offering optional specialisations in human movement science, paediatric exercise, psychological skills, talent identification, high-performance sport, sports medicine and rehabilitation, coaching, event management, global sport business, professional development, and health behaviour change. The program equips graduates with analytical, research, and practical skills, preparing them for careers in sport, exercise, health, coaching, rehabilitation, performance analysis, and related fields, or for postgraduate study.
