COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology BSc (Hons) program at Northumbria University provides students with a thorough understanding of society, social change, and research methods while developing critical thinking and analytical skills. In the first year, students study foundational modules such as Real World Research 1, Global Transformations, Thinking Sociologically 1 and 2, Social Problems: Myths and Realities, and Biography, Sociology and Everyday Life, supported by academic language skills for international students. The second year expands on these foundations with core modules including Sociology and Social Inequalities, Contemporary Social Theory, Real World Research 2, and the Live Project: Sociology in Action, complemented by optional modules such as Social Sciences Study Abroad, Sex and Gender in Society, Growing Up: Youth and Education, Families and Households, and Activism and Advocacy, allowing students to explore contemporary social issues from multiple perspectives. In the third year, students can choose a work placement or study abroad year to gain practical experience and international exposure. The final year focuses on independent research through the Work Experience Dissertation and Social Sciences Dissertation, alongside Radical Ideas in Sociology, and optional modules addressing topics such as the British working class, happiness and wellbeing, gender, violence and abuse, bodies in social worlds, and global migration and justice. The program equips graduates for careers in social policy, education, community work, and roles requiring an informed understanding of social structures and inequalities.
