COURSE CURRICULUM

The Forensic Science BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program designed to develop students’ scientific knowledge, practical skills, and professional competence for careers in forensic science and criminal investigation. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in practical forensic science, processes and practices, analytical chemistry, chemical structure, cell biology and genetics, and scientific support, while international and EU students can enhance academic language skills. Year 2 focuses on applied forensic techniques and investigative methods, including research methods, trace analysis, body fluids and blood pattern analysis, drugs and toxicology, DNA profiling, and specialist applications in criminal investigation, preparing students to apply scientific reasoning to complex scenarios. Year 3 offers optional opportunities for a study abroad experience or an industrial placement year, giving students valuable exposure to professional or international forensic environments and practical industry experience. In Year 4, students consolidate their learning through a forensic science research project and modules in complex casework and advanced forensic investigation, with optional study in contemporary issues, advanced analytical chemistry, forensic biology, and languages. Across all four years, the program emphasizes laboratory-based learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, ensuring graduates are confident and competent in evaluating, interpreting, and presenting scientific evidence. The course prepares students to pursue professional roles in forensic science, criminal investigation, and related scientific and legal fields, combining academic knowledge with practical, real-world application.
