COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a structured four-year program designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of crime, victimisation, and the ways society responds to criminal behavior. In Year 1, students establish foundational knowledge through core modules including Explaining Crime, Victims and Victimisation, Crime Myths and Realities, Identity and Diversity in Criminology, The Criminal Justice System 1, and Real World Research 1, supported by academic language modules for international and EU students. Year 2 builds on this foundation with core modules such as Concepts, Perspectives and Theories in Criminology, Contemporary Issues in Criminality, The Criminal Justice System 2, and Real World Research 2, while offering optional modules like Youth, Crime and Deviance, Sex Work, Crime and Media, and Drugs, Crime and Society, alongside opportunities for study abroad. Year 3 allows students to gain practical experience and global perspectives through a full-year work placement or study abroad program. Year 4 focuses on advanced and specialised topics with optional modules including Contemporary Policing and Security, Crimes of the Powerful, Mentally Disordered Offenders, Crime, Animals and the Environment, Understanding Extreme Violence, Crime and Technology, Social Harm, and Intimate Partner Violence, alongside the option to complete a dissertation or work experience project. Across all years, the program combines theoretical knowledge with practical research and applied learning, preparing graduates for careers in criminology, criminal justice, policy, and related professional fields.
