COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology and Sociology BSc (Hons) program is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of society, crime, and social research across four years of study. In Year 1, students establish a foundation in criminology, sociology, and the criminal justice system through core modules such as Explaining Crime, The Criminal Justice System 1, Thinking Sociologically 1 and 2, Social Problems: Myths and Realities, and Real World Research 1, with additional academic language support for international and EU students. Year 2 develops this knowledge further with core modules like Contemporary Issues in Criminality, The Criminal Justice System 2, Contemporary Social Theory, and Real World Research 2, while offering a wide range of optional modules including Youth, Crime and Deviance, Crime and Media, Drugs, Crime and Society, Sex and Gender in Society, Families and Households, and activism-based projects. Students also have the opportunity to study abroad or engage in applied projects. Year 3 allows practical experience and global perspectives through a full-year work placement or study abroad. Year 4 focuses on advanced and specialized topics, offering optional modules such as Contemporary Policing and Security, Mentally Disordered Offenders, Crime, Technology and Surveillance, Gender, Violence and Abuse, Social Harm, and Radical Ideas in Sociology, alongside the option to complete a dissertation or work experience project. Across all years, the program emphasizes critical thinking, research skills, and understanding the connection between individual behavior and social structures, preparing graduates for professional and research careers in criminology, sociology, policy, and related fields.
