COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry BSc (Hons) program at Northumbria is structured to provide a progressive and comprehensive learning experience over three years. In the first year, students focus on building a strong foundation in core areas such as analytical, physical, and chemical structure principles, along with an introduction to biological and medicinal chemistry. This year also emphasizes academic and professional skills, including practical laboratory experience and, for international and EU students, academic language support. In the second year, students advance their understanding with core modules in organic, physical, and inorganic chemistry, analytical methods, chemical information science, and applied chemistry, deepening both theoretical knowledge and practical competence. The final year allows students to specialize further with optional modules in Natural Product and Medicinal Chemistry, Advanced Instrumental and Structural Methods, and Theoretical and Computational Methods, alongside core advanced modules in organic, inorganic, physical, and polymer chemistry. The year culminates with a substantial research project, providing hands-on experience in independent investigation and problem-solving. Throughout the course, students develop critical thinking, practical laboratory skills, and the ability to apply chemical knowledge to real-world challenges. The program is designed to equip graduates with the expertise and versatility needed for careers in industry, research, or further academic study, fostering well-rounded and capable chemists.
