COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry BSc (Hons) program is structured over four years to provide a comprehensive understanding of biological and chemical sciences, along with practical and research skills. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through modules in analytical chemistry, chemical structure, cell biology, genetics, and biological and medicinal chemistry, while also developing essential laboratory and professional skills. Year 2 expands this knowledge with more specialised topics such as molecular biology, human metabolism, bioinformatics, organic chemistry, and analytical methods, helping students strengthen their analytical and research abilities. In Year 3, students have the opportunity to undertake a study abroad or industrial placement year, gaining valuable international exposure or real-world industry experience that enhances employability and practical understanding. In the final year, students focus on advanced areas of biochemistry, including natural product and medicinal chemistry, advanced analytical techniques, and current topics in the field. They also complete a major research project, applying their knowledge to real scientific investigations and developing independent research skills. Optional modules such as genomics and industrial biochemistry allow further specialisation, preparing graduates for careers in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, research, and related scientific industries.
