COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is designed to develop students’ understanding of human behaviour, thought processes, and mental health through a structured, progressive program. The foundation year introduces core concepts, including the historical foundations of psychology, contemporary debates, academic skills, data collection, and research methods, equipping students with essential knowledge and study skills. In Year 1, students explore introductory topics such as general psychology, research methodologies, laboratory skills, personality, health psychology, and mental health, while international students can access academic language support. Year 2 expands on this foundation with core modules in advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods, psychobiology, cognition, and social and developmental psychology, alongside a wide range of optional modules covering areas such as positive psychology, business psychology, investigative psychology, leadership, health, and experimental technologies, offering flexibility to tailor the degree to individual interests. Year 3 provides the option to study abroad, allowing students to gain international experience. In the final year, students undertake a substantial psychology project and advanced core modules in neuropsychology and mental health evidence evaluation, while optional modules enable specialization in areas such as health psychology, organisational psychology, consumer psychology, sport performance, digital health, and criminal justice. The program integrates theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and research training to prepare students for professional or academic careers in psychology.
