COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology with Criminology (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a structured four-year program combining the study of human behaviour with an understanding of crime and the criminal justice system. The foundation year equips students with essential skills and knowledge, covering classic studies in psychology, contemporary debates, academic skills, research methods, data management, and an introduction to psychology for life. In Year 1, students explore core areas of both disciplines, including Introduction to Psychology, Psychological Research Methodologies, qualitative and quantitative laboratory experience, Explaining Crime, and The Criminal Justice System 1, with academic language support available for international students. Year 2 focuses on advanced research methods in psychology, psychobiology, cognition, individual differences, social and developmental psychology, and psychopathology, alongside Contemporary Issues in Criminality and The Criminal Justice System 2, providing a deeper understanding of the causes and consequences of crime. Year 3 offers the option to study abroad, allowing students to gain international experience and broaden their perspective. In the final year, students complete core modules in Neuropsychology and Cognitive Science, the Psychology Project, and Mental Health Problems: Evaluating and Synthesizing Evidence, while optional modules cover specialised criminology topics such as contemporary policing, crimes of the powerful, extreme violence, social harm, technology and surveillance, intimate partner violence, and environmental crime. The program integrates theory, practical skills, and research to prepare students for careers in psychology, criminology, or the criminal justice system.
