COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport, Exercise and Nutrition (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University is a four-year program designed to develop scientific knowledge, practical skills, and professional experience for careers in sport, exercise, and nutrition. The foundation year provides essential academic and practical skills, exploring innovations in sport, exercise and performance, contemporary issues, community engagement, and a foundation project. In the first year, students gain core knowledge in psychology, human physiology, anatomy and biomechanics, energetics of exercise, research methods, and academic and professional skills, with academic language support for international and EU students. The second year focuses on applied and interdisciplinary learning, including research design, sport and health assessment, applied nutrition, professional development, and contemporary issues, with optional modules in performance analysis, strength and conditioning, physical activity, business and marketing, analytics, and the opportunity to study abroad. The third year offers optional full-year experiences through study abroad or a work placement, providing practical professional exposure. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through a major undergraduate project and core modules in contemporary sport and exercise nutrition, alongside optional modules in exercise and health interventions, human movement science, paediatric exercise, training physiology, psychological skills, injury and rehabilitation, talent identification, sport event management, coaching, global sport business, career development, and health behaviour change. The program combines hands-on training, research, and interdisciplinary study to prepare graduates for diverse careers in the dynamic field of sport, exercise, and nutrition.
