COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport Coaching BSc (Hons) extended degree at Northumbria University provides a comprehensive pathway for students aspiring to become professional coaches, sports educators, or leaders in sport. The foundation year equips students with essential skills for studying sport, explores innovations in the field, examines contemporary issues, and introduces sport organisations and community engagement, alongside a foundation project. In the first year, students develop academic and professional skills while studying research methods, sports coaching principles, long-term athlete development, child development, coaching science, and social issues related to sport participation. The second year focuses on professional development, coaching practice, leadership, and performance analysis, and offers optional modules in strength and conditioning, applied nutrition, sport marketing, analytics, school sport, and study abroad opportunities to broaden international experience. Year three allows students to further enhance practical experience through an optional study abroad year or a work placement in sport, exercise, and rehabilitation. The final year integrates advanced coaching practice and enhancing coaching craft with a major undergraduate project, while optional modules cover areas such as paediatric sport science, injury and rehabilitation, talent identification, high-performance sport, sport event management, applied coaching in education, global sport business, professional development, and health, exercise, and behaviour change. The program develops practical expertise, theoretical understanding, and professional skills necessary for successful careers in coaching, sports development, and leadership within sport-related industries.
