The Sport and Exercise Science extended degree at Northumbria University offers a structured and practical pathway to develop expertise in sport, exercise, and health. The foundation year equips students with essential study skills, a foundation project, knowledge of innovations in sport, performance principles, contemporary issues, and an introduction to sport organisations and community engagement. In year one, students focus on the fundamentals of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology, energetics, research methods, and academic and professional skills, providing a solid scientific and practical base. Year two expands this knowledge with modules in sport performance assessment, exercise and health evaluation, research design, and professional development, alongside optional modules covering strength and conditioning, nutrition, performance analysis, physical activity and health, sport management, digital marketing, and analytics. Opportunities for a study abroad experience further enhance global understanding and applied learning. In the final year, students undertake a major research project while developing advanced expertise in exercise and health interventions, human movement, paediatric sport, training and performance, psychological skills, injury and rehabilitation, talent identification, high-performance sport, coaching, event management, and global sport business. The program combines scientific theory with practical application and professional development, preparing graduates for careers in sports performance, coaching, health and fitness, research, management, and related sectors, as well as further postgraduate study.
