COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) at Northumbria University provides a thorough understanding of society, social structures, and contemporary issues while developing critical thinking, research, and practical skills. The foundation year introduces students to core concepts such as crime and society, sociological imagination, politics and decision making, social sciences debates, and essential academic skills, preparing them for undergraduate study. In the first year, students explore real-world research, global transformations, sociological thinking, social problems, and the role of biography in everyday life, with additional language support for international students. The second year builds on this foundation through core modules on social inequalities, contemporary social theory, applied research, and live sociology projects, alongside optional modules in areas such as gender, youth and education, families, and activism. Students may also undertake a study abroad year to gain international perspective. In the final years, students can participate in optional work placements or a study abroad year, while completing core modules such as radical ideas in sociology and optional modules covering class, wellbeing, gender, violence, bodies in society, and global perspectives on migration and justice. Across the program, students gain analytical, research, and reflective skills that prepare them for careers in research, policy, community development, education, and other roles requiring a deep understanding of social dynamics.
