COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physical Geography (Extended Degree) BSc (Hons) program at Northumbria University is designed to develop students’ knowledge and skills through a structured pathway from foundation to advanced study. The foundation year introduces key topics such as environmental geography, sustainable development, earth system sciences, and environmental communication, while also building essential academic and fieldwork skills. In the first year, students gain a solid grounding in physical environments, global and local environmental challenges, and earth system science, alongside practical experience in fieldwork and environmental mapping techniques. The second year focuses on developing specialist knowledge in areas such as applied geosciences, earth observation, GIS, and research methods, with optional modules including ecology, water resources, and past environmental change. Students can also enhance their practical skills through field applications. The third year offers opportunities for a work placement or study abroad, either for a full year or a semester, allowing students to gain valuable international or professional experience. In the final year, students complete a dissertation and choose from a range of advanced optional modules, including geospatial applications, environmental data analysis, conservation management, and environmental policy. Overall, the course equips students with strong analytical, technical, and research skills for careers in environmental and geographical fields.
